Amey Case Study

TANDBERG

Amey is Britain’s leading public services company, managing transport networks and
local services from 200 sites across the UK. This understandably required extensive
travel from many of its 11,000 staff, but compromised Amey’s commitment to cut its
carbon footprint – 80% of Amey’s emissions come from travel and transport.
“Lots of people were driving long distances for fairly short, routine meetings” says
Keith Sexton, Amey’s Director of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality. “This brings
fairly significant safety risks, not to mention lost productive time.” Consequently,
Amey started investigating video conferencing.

Beckman Coulter, a large multi-national medical instrumentation systems provider, improved the security and productivity of its field service engineers with Mobility XE Mobile VPN software. Now their engineers can access critical customer information securely and remotely from hospital labs, biotech facilities, university research centers or wherever their work takes them. Mobility XE also enabled field service and corporate applications to work seamlessly in wireless environments and in areas with intermittent coverage—eliminating repeated re-logins and data re-entry when users lost connectivity. Mobility XE also secured all transmissions to and from workers’ Pocket PCs and protects Beckman Coulter’s corporate networks from unauthorized access via encryption and device quarantine features.

Malvern Hill District Council

Midland Communications

Malvern Hills District Council is responsible for delivering a variety of services, from issuing planning permission and housing benefit payments, to council tax collection and environmental services for residents in Worcestershire.

Despite being a small district council, it still needs to deliver the same levels of service to residents as larger councils that benefit from economies of scale. It is crucial that staff work with optimal efficiency to meet the fierce challenges of delivering a vast number of services with a limited budget.

Malvern Hills Council was operating an aging telephony system that was not supporting the organization adequately. It needed a phone system that it could depend on which offered a reliable means for people to contact the council. Instead of simply replacing it with a traditional phone system, the council chose to move forward with an IP unified communications platform, integrating with OCS and with desktop virtualisation.

The council also wanted to implement a system that would support more collaborative working across the council, from those in the contact centre, to those on the road, to desk-based employees and home workers.

sophisticated telephone system to ensure it never misses a sales call.
The Solution - Their telephone system needed to channel calls through local numbers to people across all 42 local sites, acting as a single telephone system. This was coupled with inter-site call overflow and high-level functionality, usually only available to larger telephone systems.
The Benefits - During initial stages, lost calls were reduced by 10% translating into improved sales figures.

Wireless field working

Interchange Group

The efficient utilisation of field resources is critical to the success of many business processes. Torex contacted Interchange Group, as their long-time service and customer management software supplier, to help them replace an ageing mobility application for their European field service engineers.
Torex wanted to benefit from current mobile technology that could carry them forward for the next five years and beyond and also enable them to decrease costs and improve productivity, customer service levels and security.
Torex required a distributed application that could work happily in or out of the office across all their European businesses, that was reliable, would support current needs, and that would provide a foundation for ongoing extension of the functionality to improve and streamline on site customer service. Interchange Mobility Suite™, a highly flexible mobile working workflow platform that enables business applications to be accessed via a single user interface with a single user log-on, was selected for the task.
Within just 12 weeks, Interchange was able to implement the solution where for Torex’s back office service management application integrates with Mobility Suite on BlackBerry® smartphones using Web Services to provide robust and efficient communications between the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry.

The field engineers at Portsmouth Water were spending a great deal of their time on the road visiting customers all across the region. To receive vital information about the next job or close down a completed call out, staff had to travel back to the company’s headquarters in Havant to fill out the requisite paperwork. This labour-intensive process not only increased staff travelling time, it also reduced how many calls each engineer could handle in a day.
When Interchange analysed the requirement with the Portsmouth Water team it was identified that a key need would be to both minimise the “in use” cost of operation and keep the service team in the field to maximise productivity. The Interchange solution now integrates seamlessly with the company’s existing software package, to enable engineers to complete and submit job forms in real time. Engineers can receive electronic job sheets and send emails on the move, as well as access their Outlook calendars. All information relating to the status of jobs is now dispatched straight to the BlackBerry® smartphone.

Outside the perimeter of the business location additional controls need to be added to a mobile IT deployment to ensure the security and integrity of data on the device and netwpork access. Balancing the need for control with flexibility given to the user requires care and attention to both strategy and implementation.

Mobile users have many challenges facing them as they try to work outside of a managed and familiar working environment. Too many constraints and challenges can distract and divert users from the task at hand, meaning that productivity gains hoped for by the deployment of the technology will be lost.

This paper looks at how to get the best out of mobile productivity and how to avoid the six most common mobililty pitfalls during the planning and excecution of mobile implementations.

NetMotion Wireless

Traditional approaches for encrypting data in transit such as IPSec and SSL are intended for wired networks with high-speed, highly reliable connections. In a mobile wireless network environment where data transmission speeds are slower and connections less reliable, traditional VPN performance suffers, frequently causing application failure, data loss and reduced productivity.

This White Paper explains in detail why IPSec and SSL VPNs fail to meet the needs of highly mobile workers, and how a Mobile VPN, such as NetMotion Mobility XE succeeds where legacy technologies fail.

The two main tools we use for communicating - telephone and e-mail have traditionally existed in isolated silos, independent of each other. Over time some of these technologies have been integrated - voice and IP data network, voice messaging and e-mail , video and the IP data network etc. However until now nothing has integrated all these technologies into a single, easy to manage communications solution that can be used in a controlled business environment.

Unified Communications is a concept used to describe the coming together of devices and applications used to enrich how we communicate with each other, increase our productivity, enable more efficient team collaboration and to streamline business processes.

As an integrated solution Unified Communications can greatly increase the productivity of an organisation, allowing users to make decisions on how to communicate with each other, based on the detailed presence status of the person or people they want to contact.

A tale of two technologies
Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and other IT managers straddle two worlds – not because
they want to, but because they have to.
First, there is the world of the data center. Its servers and other hardware components, and
the business applications that run on them, are the backbone of the organization. They turn
the reams of data that companies generate and collect into the information they need to
understand and operate the business.
Then, there is the world of telephony. Here, voice applications ensure that the people whose
performance determines how well the organization does, how effectively it competes, and
whether it succeeds or fails, communicate with one another in myriad ways to ensure that
information is understood and acted on. Even in today’s high-tech world, voice
communication is the beating heart of the business.

A key challenge faced by enterprise IT management is how to ensure the productivity of the growing population of mobile workers. A successful mobile deployment can empower mobile workers with the resources they need to be effective at the point of service, resulting in a more productive workforce, expedited customer service, happier customers and increased revenue. Selecting the right mobile solutions and managing today’s mobile enterprise, however, is not a simple task. Successful mobile deployments require IT management to take a holistic approach managing all elements of the mobile deployment, including applications, wireless networks and devices.

This white paper describes how Quality of Service (QoS) can enable organizations to maximize mobile worker productivity and fully leverage the benefits of their mobile deployments.
