ADSL – the weakest link in the VoIP chain?

Thursday 11 March 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM

It seems that it is a commonly held belief that basic ADSL broadband connection is unsuitable for VoIP – unless you make it an uncontended link – and even then a typical ADSL uplink cannot support many calls. If research is to believed, the majority of SMBs are extremely enthusiastic about switching to VoIP, but believe that at present, the costs of ensuring quality and reliability make this only affordable for the larger enterprises.
If the basic IP protocol lacks the necessary QoS to guarantee voice services over a WAN, and the costs of overcoming these are prohibitive - are we going to wait until BT’s much over-hyped 21CN (now looking somewhat delayed) is rolled out nationally to take advantage of this pent up demand for converged services? There is another way, and it is affordable and here now!

Applying Open Source technology to Contact Centers

Nick Thwaites, CEO - Braxtel

Wednesday 10 March 13:50 PM - 14:20 PM

If you look carefully, a very powerful trend is emerging. US Government sponsors Open Source technology, UK Government recommends wide spread Open Source adoption.
The European Union has developed a strategy encouraging Open Source technologies . The wind of change is not only apparent within the Public sector, but also private enterprise. If you Google Open Source adoption you will see the absolute confirmation of this latest technology revolution. Massive corporations globally are now switching and trusting Open Source applications to manage their customers, run their customers, run their networks and handle telephony and Contact Centre process.
It is therefore crucial to ensure the same due diligence is applied when selecting an open source application. of course it substantially lowers the price of the the chosen solution but now it also delivers all of the features of comparable products.
How can Open Source technology and in particular Telephony, Contact Centre and CRM applications benefit your business?

  • Mobile
Seminar

This session will discuss how managing business applications in the cloud to meet corporate requirements, presents new challenges when compared to managing individual consumers - the historical focus of the mobile industry. Business cloud applications typically are multi-tenanted, having multiple Enterprise customers each with their own users, running on a single instance of each application in the cloud. Increasingly they need to be accessible from multiple devices. How you manage the policies of companies, the rights of users, administer adds, moves, and changes across multiple cloud applications without alienating the customers’ own administrators, and how you empower sales channels, including partners and re-sellers. This calls for distributed hierarchical control with appropriate security in place and in many cases, compliance with regulatory requirements with the need to enable and manage e-discovery and audit rights.

Video is fast become the hottest topic in the communications sector. However, the challenge remains to develop a model to monetize video, either through real increases in ARPU on the carrier side, or through breakthroughs in self-service delivery, create new up-sell and cross-sell opportunities, and boost agent productivity at the enterprise level.

This presentation will show where the proper application of video can actually increase customer satisfaction, reduce costs and/or increase sales for the enterprise when used as part of an Interactive Voice/Video Response system or when implemented as part of a video-enabled contact center.

PANEL DEBATE: Does UC Matter?

Adrian Brookes, VP - Office of the CTO - Siemens Enterprise Communications

Brendan Buckingham, Unified Communication Leader - NE Europe - IBM

Chris Holmes, Head of Vodafone Business Services - Vodafone Business Services

Lee Shorten, Managing Director, UK and Ireland - Avaya

Marcus Jewell, Enterprise Director - Mitel

Mark Summerson, General Manager, Unified Communications - BT Global Services

Peter King, Office Server Group Director - Microsoft UK

Rob Bamforth, Principal Analyst - Quocirca Ltd

Wednesday 10 March 13:10 PM - 14:20 PM

So far the combined marketing efforts of vendors have made Unified Communications look slick on paper and even indicative of a paradigm shift in enterprise communications. However on the buyer side some confusion remains about what exactly is on offer beyond IP telephony...and there is a strong feeling that suppliers are unable to demonstrate the benefits unified communications will bring to their businesses.

This debate is the chance for businesses to get clarity from the vendor community of how Unified Communications can translate into the real benefits that most customers are actually looking for…and an opportunity for evangelists within the vendor community to respond to the challenge from businesses that Unified Communications is simply a marketing term designed to repackage old promises.

CTI Group, a leading provider of ebilling, bill analysis, VoIP call recording and call management applications, today announces that it has achieved new industry heights using its SmartRecord IP on the IBM BladeCenter. Combined for the first time in recent testing the IBM hardware and SmartRecord IP delivered a superior standard of call recording, whilst at a lower cost of ownership for telecom customers.

Recent performance testing at IBM’s Montpellier, France facility, SmartRecord IP was tested on a set of IBM blades with a BroadSoft BroadWorks softswitch. With its unique recording methodology and utilising the BroadWorks Lawful Intercept interface, the recorder was benchmarked with 316,000 calls, representing 380,000 minutes of recorded calls with an average CPU utilisation of 15 percent and a peak utilisation of 25 percent. The performance benchmarks demonstrated a 50 percent performance advantage over previous benchmark results.

PagePlay, a web development company focused on creating websites and web applications for schools, charities and small businesses, needed a telephony solution that was both inexpensive and offered a limited contract.

“Cost was one of the main drivers,” explains Chris Charlton, Business Director, “and we didn’t want to invest in major infrastructure – VoIP was the answer.”

Choosing a supplier was simple, “General reviews around VoIP meant that we’d heard of Gradwell. We looked at other suppliers but Gradwell were the best fit.”

Getting started was simple, “It’s plug and play – once it’s set up it’s really easy". Chris has also made good use of additional Gradwell features, “Voicemail-to-Email is great because we can invite callers to leave messages knowing we can pick them up wherever we are – it’s a feature I’ve not seen elsewhere.”

VoIP has also helped improve their product offering, “We’re now able to offer customers free ‘no call centre’ support for our PagePlay content management system.”

The positive impact of Gradwell VoIP on PagePlay’s business is palpable, “We’re finding operational benefits that we didn’t think we could as a small business – it’s so much more than a simple phone line, and at a fraction of the cost.”

Dimensions chose a managed CallPort VoIP service provided by 8el, providing benefits that could be instantly received and prove to be very cost effective.

Minimal hardware was required, with the main cost consisting of providing employees with IP phones. A relatively low cost for a high gain, because it instantly provided a sophisticated set of call features.

Furthermore, all local and national calls to fixed lines are free as part of the package, so there are instant cost savings, plus it makes it a lot easier to predict call costs. The move to VoIP has provided savings of over 30%,which will rise to 40% on completion of the roll out.

L & H Components imports magnetic components for transformers and motors. As a small company, working out of two locations using different landlines, they decided to improve customer service by unifying telecommunications.

Simon Bellamy, Director, explains, “With two of us working from home, customers had two different numbers for the same company – we knew there had to be a better way and VoIP was the logical solution.” Simon found Gradwell, “To be honest, there were very few providers offering a business service like Gradwell’s.”

Setting up the service was quick and easy, “Implementation was very quick. I signed up online and it was all set up within minutes.”

After three years using VoIP, Simon rates Gradwell’s approach to resolving issues as a huge plus, “I find Gradwell very open and honest – they put a status on their website within ½ hour of a problem occurring - a lot of providers would hide behind them.”

Since implementing Gradwell’s services, L & H Components has seen costs come down and responsiveness increase, improving customer service, “We portray a much more professional image because we now have one phone number. The distance between our sites is invisible to customers – exactly the perception needed.”

South Northumberland Radio Group provides the region with broadcast-standard facilities and an FM radio service. With the team operating at different locations, the group needed an affordable telephony solution that would ensure each member of the team is contactable wherever they are.

Station Manager, Robert Pobjoy explains, “It’s imperative that we’re contactable wherever we are. Choosing VoIP meant we could connect remote sites together via one number. And because our phone system is connected up to our studio we can have live contributions wherever we are, at virtually no cost. There’s no limit to what we can do.”

“We’ve definitely saved on call costs but we’ve saved more in time. The system is so flexible – if I need to get a new line up and running, all I need is broadband and it’s working in next to no time.”

The group also makes use of Gradwell’s additional VoIP features such as hold music and voicemail to email, “The number of features that Gradwell provides means we can do so much, it offers the flexibility our business demands.”

“The service is excellent. Everything is fast and you get support when you need it, which is critical for us.”

"It does what we need very well. It gives us control and the flexibility to be able to work at multiple sites, and also gives us the feel of a larger company." Dave Harvey, Managing Director

“We’d just increased in size to three people so I wanted multi-line connectivity in the office but also a line at home as I work in both locations. VoIP appeared to be the right solution.”
After selecting Gradwell VoIP, Dave discovered a number of immediate benefits, “Both VoIP phones arrived pre-configured and ready go, which was very useful.”

Now Dave knows the phones like the back of their hands, as Dave continues, “I added a new number the other day and it was literally functioning within five minutes of doing it!”

A Gradwell customer for more than two years, Dave regards his customer experience as positive, “When you call customer support you get through to a person who’s technically competent and knowledgeable – not somebody with a script.”

In the retail sector, the customer is king – and customers expect one thing above all: namely that the desired products are available in adequate quantities and, of course, that they are correctly labelled. To do justice to these requirements, many producers and wholesalers today engage the services of external field workers, known as rack jobbers. In addition to providing an appealing presentation, in particular they ensure that merchandise is ordered, checked and labelled in the relevant outlet. Each day the rack jobber goes on tour to his various customers to deliver goods on site, accept orders or adjust the pricing on labels. Accordingly, the rack jobber’s key task consists in coordinating the requisitioning and delivery of merchandise and in updating all the relevant information at the POS. Alder Bridge Steiner-Waldorf School is an independent primary school for children three to 12 years. Combining fixed line telephony with old PBX systems, Bursar John Dawson knew there had to be a better way.

“Gradwell are aimed at the business market rather than the home market like many other VoIP providers, they also offered the range of services that we were looking for.”
“We used two fixed lines to make external calls and an ancient PBX system for internal calls – it wasn’t possible to integrate.”

John opted for VoIP, starting with a cautious approach, “We started out using Gradwell for outgoing calls but a BT line for incoming calls.” After a few months of building confidence, John took the plunge, “I was satisfied with the service so we went for the full hosted VoIP and ported our number from BT.”

“We’ve saved on call charges, line rental and have greater flexibility by answering the phone from home to provide emergency cover.”

John was happy with the support, “I tried to get my home VoIP talking to Gradwell. I was having a few problems but Gradwell went the extra mile so that it could all work how we wanted it to.”

Until now, voice telephony and virtualization might have been on different planets,
so far apart were they. In the data center, voice technology was in a closet of its own,
and managed with a separate set of hardware, processes, staff, and technologies.
Now, this is changing. With the combined power of virtualization and unified
communications, mission-critical voice applications are joining enterprise business
applications in the mainstream data center.

The Benefits of Migrating Fax to IP Networks

MESSAGEmanager Solutions/ICON

IP Fax (FoIP) is an opportunity for companies to significantly reduce their total fax bill, dramatically improve business processes and increase security and control over sensitive fax data.
This paper describes the specific cost and productivity benefits of implementing an IP Fax solution.

The two main tools we use for communicating - telephone and e-mail have traditionally existed in isolated silos, independent of each other. Over time some of these technologies have been integrated - voice and IP data network, voice messaging and e-mail , video and the IP data network etc. However until now nothing has integrated all these technologies into a single, easy to manage communications solution that can be used in a controlled business environment.

Unified Communications is a concept used to describe the coming together of devices and applications used to enrich how we communicate with each other, increase our productivity, enable more efficient team collaboration and to streamline business processes.

As an integrated solution Unified Communications can greatly increase the productivity of an organisation, allowing users to make decisions on how to communicate with each other, based on the detailed presence status of the person or people they want to contact.

Understanding IP Fax

MESSAGEmanager Solutions/ICON

As VoIP becomes more prevalent as a replacement for traditional PSTN connections, how to handle fax traffic becomes more and more of an issue. If you are thinking that you can just plug your fax machine into your IP telephony system, you will be disappointed. Fax imposes special demands on VoIP networks because the standards used for fax transmission are designed to exploit features of switched circuits that do not fit within the parameters of most VoIP equipment.

A tale of two technologies
Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and other IT managers straddle two worlds – not because
they want to, but because they have to.
First, there is the world of the data center. Its servers and other hardware components, and
the business applications that run on them, are the backbone of the organization. They turn
the reams of data that companies generate and collect into the information they need to
understand and operate the business.
Then, there is the world of telephony. Here, voice applications ensure that the people whose
performance determines how well the organization does, how effectively it competes, and
whether it succeeds or fails, communicate with one another in myriad ways to ensure that
information is understood and acted on. Even in today’s high-tech world, voice
communication is the beating heart of the business.

Hosted IP Telephony

InTechnology

Our managed telephony service, Unity IP Voice, is a hosted voice service designed specifically for businesses. Unlike the traditional approach of installing a physical PBX system at each office, all telephony switching equipment is hosted at our secure, highly available data centre facilities. The voice service is then delivered over our LANnet IP network direct to your offices, with IP phones connected to your office LAN. This network-based design is particularly suited for dynamic and growing organisations as it can be quickly changed to fit your requirements, and staff at home or remote offices get exactly the same functionality as their head office colleagues.

For companies looking to move to IP Telephony (VoIP), particularly multi-sited organisations, hosted IP Telephony (VoIP) can offer significant cost-saving, as well as increased operational efficiency, resilience and business continuity.

InTechnology's Hosted OCS service provides a professional instant messaging (IM) and presence service for real-time communication across an organisation.

With presence, staff can significantly reduce the time it takes to make or receive business-critical decisions, by enabling colleagues to see one another's availability. This then allows colleagues to make contact using Instant Messaging or by phone.

Whether your staff are based in a single office or across multiple sites, even across the world, the combination of presence and IM can help improve productivity, drive business efficiencies and build a more agile organisation.

Hosted OCS can also be upgraded to include hosted IP telephony, which allows staff to make and receive phone calls directly from their Microsoft Office Communicator client.
